WE ARE
We are independent educators, researchers and mental health professionals
from varied backgrounds, all of us specialists in the field of family
violence. We are joined in a common purpose, concerned about partner,
parent and sibling abuse and their consequences.
Our goal is to reduce violence in the home, and to build safe, healthy
and productive relationships. In our view, this goal can best be realized
within a gender-inclusive, whole-system framework. We believe that current
public policy towards intervention is both short-sighted and inadequate,
and that effective treatment must be empirically derived, based upon sound
research and clinical experience.
We believe that family violence stems from learned behavior, as well
as disrupted patterns of childhood attachment, which can be repaired and
altered. Our approaches are eclectic and practical. Treatment is guided
by thorough assessment, and we reject rigid, "one-size-fits-all"
methods. Rather than assign blame, we empower our clients by teaching
them alternatives to abuse, and by holding them accountable for their
actions.
